Findings of Investigation into Manx Telecom's Broadband Outage
Monday, October 19, 2020
ConsumerIn August 2020 the Communications Commission (the Commission) became aware of a broadband outage that impacted upon a significant number of the Island’s consumers. The outage, which was traced back to a hardware failure in one of the Broadband Network Gateways of Manx Telecom’s core network, began on 24th August 2020, and Manx Telecom worked over the subsequent days to find and resolve the cause, with service fully restored by 3rd September 2020.
Consequently, once Manx Telecom had worked to restore the Island’s service, the Commission began a formal investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the broadband outage and determine whether Manx Telecom had breached its regulatory obligations on the run up to, or as a direct result of, the outage.
Overall, having fully investigated the matter, the Commission finds that on this occasion Manx Telecom did not breach its regulatory obligations.
Further details of the Commission's investigation can be found in Information Notice 22/20.

Broadband Issues Between 24th and 26th August
Thursday, August 27, 2020
ConsumerOn the evening of Monday 24th August Manx Telecom suffered an issue with its broadband network which resulted in around 7000 end users across the Island having no service for up to 2 days. The services were fully restored on the evening of Wednesday 26th August.
Any end users who are still experiencing issues should contact their service provider directly. In addition, please speak to your provider if you have encountered additional costs to help you to stay online during the period.
While the priority for Manx Telecom to date has been to ensure that customers have their services restored, now that the source of the outage has apparently been identified the Commission can assess whether there are any issues that it needs to pursue further.
