Thursday, October 29, 2020Industry
The Bill completed its passage through the Legislative Branches on 27th October and will now be considered for Royal Assent.
The main purpose of the Communications Bill 2018 is to update the legislation governing the regulation of telecommunications and broadcasting. The Bill largely adopts a technology and service-neutral approach to allow for flexibility in the future and it has been drafted with futureproofing in mind.
A copy of the Bill is available from the Tynwald website.
When enacted the Bill will support the process of the award of additional spectrum in the Multi Band Award Process . The spectrum when awarded will give the option to operators to offer a range of innovative products to consumers. The legislation will also give the Commission a wider range of penalties in exercising its regulatory functions as well as stand-alone competition powers in the telecommunications sector.
The Commission will be running a further series of consultations on the required secondary legislation to implement the Bill in due course.
